Functional Capacity Evaluation "FCE": Its Applications and Use in Industry
Applications of the Functional Capacity Evaluation. There are three major applications of functional capacity evaluations: the baseline evaluation, the job-specific assessment and the medico-legal arena. Baseline Evaluation The first typically demonstrated within the Industrial Rehabilitation realm, and probably the most common usage, is the baseline evaluation. In this type of application of the FCE, the assessor attempts to objectively identify an individual's demonstrated ability for typical work postures and abilities; in order to assist injured personal to safely re-enter the workplace. Job-Specific Assessment The second application is the job-specific matching of an injured worker to pre-determined or known physical job demands via the Job Demands Analysis or provided job description towards a target job; these jobs may either be the worker's own job/occupation or any occupation. This test is more demanding and may last upwards of five to six hours in duration and serves to address the matching of a job to a the workers demonstrated physical tolerances and abilities. Medico-Legal FCE Thirdly, is the medico-legal FCE, which lasts upwards of six to eight hours in duration and likely addresses a worker's residual abilities and tolerances following some injury or motor vehicle accident or trauma as well as loss of ability, potential for rehabilitation in preparation for the determination of loss of earning capacity and future cost of care; this type of assessment is usually involved in tort law. According to wikipedia, "tort is the law of civil wrongs." This type of law ensures individuals "rights to compensation when another person harms their legally protected interests.” Understanding the applications of the FCE will better serve and streamline your company’s human resource management and effectively administer successful return to work programs.
